Luigi Mastrangelo (born August 17, 1975 in Mottola ) is an Italian volleyball player . He took part in four Olympic tournaments and was three times European champion.
Career
Mastrangelo started his career in 1991 in his hometown youth team. From 1992 to 1994 he played at Beton Matera in the B1 league and in the youth team of Gonzaga Milano . In 1994 the middle blocker switched to the first division team Alpitour Traco Cuneo for the first time . However, he spent the next two seasons again at the lower class clubs VBC Mondovì (B1) and Formaggi Sardi Sant'Antioco (A2). In 1997 he returned to Cuneo. With the club Mastrangelo won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1998 and the Italian Cup a year later. On May 28, 1999, he made his debut for the Italian national team in the world league match in Sydney against Australia , which finally won the competition. In the same year Italy became European champions with Mastrangelo by beating Russia . In 2000 the Italians successfully defended the title in the world league . At the Olympic Games in Sydney Mastrangelo won the bronze medal with the team. Another victory in the world league followed in 2001 and in 2002 Mastrangelo was successful with Cuneo in the Italian Cup and the CEV Cup . He then moved to Lube Macerata within the league . With his new club he won the cup again. The Italians won the World Cup in 2003 . At the European Championships in Germany they defended the title and Mastrangelo received an individual award as best blocker. In 2004, the national team narrowly missed their next title by losing to Brazil . In the final of the Olympic tournament she lost to the same opponent. In 2005, however, Italy became European champions for the third time in a row at home ; Mastrangelo was again the best middle blocker of the tournament. He then went to Cimone Modena for one season before being signed by M. Roma Volley in 2006 . In 2008 Mastrangelo won the CEV Cup with the Romans in front of their own audience . After a season at Stamplast Martina Franca , he joined his current club, BreBanca Lannutti Cuneo , in 2009 . In his first season after returning to Cuneo, he was Italian champion and managed to win the CEV Cup again . In 2011 he won the national cup. With the national team he lost the final of the European Championship against Serbia . In 2012 he won the bronze medal with Italy at the Olympic Games in London .
