Alexei Igorewitsch Werbow ( Russian Алексей Игоревич Вербов ; English transcription: Aleksey Igorevich Verbov; born January 31, 1982 in Moscow ) is a Russian volleyball player .

Career

Werbow started his career at VK Dynamo Moscow . From 1995 to 1999 he was Russian junior champion. He also won the European Championship in 1999 with the national junior team. He then played one season for MGTU Luzhniki before moving to VK CSKA Moscow in 2000 . Werbow was also successful in beach volleyball . The three-time Russian junior champion and his partner Anton Kulikowski came third in this discipline at the 2001 World Youth Championship in Le Lavandou and 2003 European Youth Champion in Stare Jabłonki . In addition, the duo reached 19th place at the 2003 European Beach Volleyball Championship . In the hall, Werbow played from 2003 for VK Lokomotiv-Belogorje and won the Russian Cup in the same year. In 2004, he won the national championship and the Champions League by winning the final in front of a home crowd against league rivals VK Iskra Odintsovo . In January 2004 the Libero made his debut for the Russian national team at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Leipzig . The team reached the final of the Europa League and then won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Athens . In the 2004/05 season he was loaned to ZSK Gazprom Surgut and won the Russian Cup for the second time. With the national team, he won the Europa League in 2005 .
