Yumilka Ruiz

Yumilka Ruiz Luaces (born May 8, 1978 in Camagüey ) is a former Cuban volleyball player .

Ruiz won gold medals at the Olympic Games twice in a row with the Cuban national volleyball team in 1996 and 2000 . She also took bronze in 2004 and came fourth in 2008 . She won gold at the 1998 World Championships , the 1999 World Cup and the 2000 Grand Prix. In addition, she received individual honors as the best attacker and most valuable player (MVP) in several international competitions.

Ruiz is 1.79 m tall and played on the outside position. With her small size and enormous jumping power (tee height 3.29 m) her style was reminiscent of the legendary Mireya Luis and was considered her successor. Ruiz played temporarily in Italy, but mainly in Cuba and most recently in Russia in 2007/08. In the same year she ended her career at the age of 30. She then served on the 20-member Active Council of the International Olympic Committee until August 2016 .
