The Linha de Manuaçu is a historic railway line in Brazil and connected the then province of Rio de Janeiro with Minas Gerais .

history

The Linha de Manuaçu railway connected Recreio with Santa Luzia (Carangola) and was completed in 1880. On May 2, 1883, the line was taken over by the Estrada de Ferro Leopoldina railway company. A change in the previous route beyond Muriaé extended the line in the state of Rio de Janeiro and in Santo Antonio (Porciúncula) it then returned to Minas Gerais , where it was continued to Carangola, where it was under construction in 1887 and there on the Linha de Carangola met. From 1911 to 1915, the "Leopoldina" then extended the line to Manhuaçu, the end point. The stretch from Manhuaçu to Carangola was closed in 1975, followed by the Porciúncula – Carangola route in 1977, and in 1979 the line between Cisneiros and Porciúncula. The last little stretch between Recreio and Cisneiros was never officially closed.
