Jelena Michailovna Godina ( Russian Елена Михайловна Година , English transcription: Yelena Mikhailovna Godina ; born September 17, 1977 in Sverdlovsk ) is a Russian volleyball player . She won the Olympic silver medal in Sydney in 2000 , was world champion in 2006 and three times European champion .
Career
Godina began her career in 1991 with VK Uralotschka-NTMK and won the national championship six times in a row. With her club she won the Champions League final against HAOK Mladost Zagreb in 1994 . The following season the Uralochka defended the title in the final against Pallavolo Femminile Matera . In 1995 Godina made her debut in the national team and came third at the European Championships with Russia. In 1996 the Russians came third at the Grand Prix and just missed a medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta by beating Brazil 2: 3 . In 1997, however, they won the Grand Prix and prevailed against Croatia in the final of the European Championship .
1997/98 Godina played in Croatia with OK Dubrovnik and won the national cup competition, the national championship and the European Champions League. With the national team there was a second place at the 1998 Grand Prix and a third place at the World Championships in Japan . The outside attacker then moved to the Japanese league for the NEC Red Rockets. Godina won the Grand Prix with Russia in 1999 and defended the title at the European Championships in Italy - again in the final against Croatia. Russia also came second in the World Cup . From 1999 to 2001 Godina played again for her hometown club Uralotschka and won the national championship twice. After another second place in the Grand Prix , she came with the national team in the final of the 2000 Olympic tournament and received the silver medal after the 2: 3 against Cuba. In 2001 Russia took third place in the Grand Prix and again defended the title at the European Championships in Bulgaria by beating Italy in the final . Then Godina played a season in Turkey with Eczacıbaşı Istanbul and won the national double of championship and cup here. With the national team, she won the Grand Prix for the third time in 2002 and came third at the World Cup in Germany .
After a one-year break, Godina was active at CV Tenerife for two years and was twice Spanish champion and cup winner. She also won the Champions League in 2004 . After a year in Italy at the Chieri Volley Club , she returned to Russia in 2006 to join VK Dynamo Moscow . With the club she became Russian champion in 2007 and 2009, reached the Champions League final in 2007 and 2009 and won the Russian Cup in 2009. With the national team, she became world champion in Japan in 2006 . In the 2008 Olympic tournament , she missed the semifinals for the first time when she played for the third time; after being out of the quarter-finals against China, Russia finished fifth.
