Ulrich Eisenhut ( mentioned for the first time in 1508 ; † before May 22, 1537 in Altstätten ; authorized to reside in Gais AR ) was a Swiss politician, mayor and delegate from the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Ulrich Eisenhut was tax master from 1508 to 1513 and then - from 1516 to 1534 - with interruptions, Landammann of the then undivided state of Appenzell . Between 1508 and 1535 he represented his country, which in 1513 was the 13th place in the Confederation , in over 60 diets. From 1519 Ulrich Eisenhut was a sought-after arbitrator in matters of religion. As a supporter of the Reformation he mediated in 1535 the border dispute between Gais and Oberriet in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley . In this function as well as in the so-called banner trade - a dispute between the state of Appenzell and the economically strong city of St. Gallen, which is not part of the Confederation, over a banner captured by the Appenzell people at the Battle of Vögelinsegg in 1403, the Eisenhut supposedly the St. Gallern is said to have sold - his envious people, especially Jakob Büchler , accused him of treason . Despite a lack of evidence, Ulrich Eisenhut was arrested in 1535. The city of St. Gallen and the confederates mediated unsuccessfully. However, in the same year he was able to escape. In 1537, the old Landammann, who had recently died bitterly, was rehabilitated by the Federal Diet .
