Leeston is a place in the Selwyn District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located in the Canterbury Plains about 40 kilometers southwest of Christchurch , not far from the Pacific Ocean between Lake Ellesmere and the Rakaia River . For the 2013 census, the town had 1506 inhabitants.
history
In the place there is a war memorial in memory of the fallen of the First World War . Some street names also refer to battlefields of the war, such as the Turkish port city of Gallipoli , where one of the bloodiest battles of the war took place in 1915 with the participation of New Zealand troops .
Leeston was once the headquarters of the Selwyn District before it was moved to the larger town of Rolleston . The Council still has an office in the city.
Personalities
- Daniel Carter (* 1982), rugby union player who has also played for the national team All Blacks , was born in Leeston in1982.
