Grant James Fox (born June 6, 1962 in New Plymouth ) is a retired New Zealand rugby union player and coach. He played on the position of the connector (fly-half).
Career
The graduate of the Auckland Grammar School played from 1982 for the Auckland Rugby Football Union in the New Zealand championship. With Auckland he won eight championship titles (1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1993). Fox played a key role in ensuring that Auckland remained unbeaten in 61 challenging games for the Ranfurly Shield from 1985 to 1993 .
In October 1984 Fox was appointed to the squad of the All Blacks (national team) for the first time . At first it struggled to secure a regular place, but was used regularly from 1987 onwards. He achieved his greatest success at the Rugby Union World Cup in 1987 , when New Zealand won the world championship, not least thanks to its precise kicks. Fox scored 645 points in 46 international matches, setting a new record that was only exceeded by Andrew Mehrtens two decades later .
After retiring as a player in 1993, Fox continued to be associated with rugby as a television commentator. He also worked as an assistant coach: with Auckland he was three more times New Zealand champion (1999, 2002 and 2003), with the Blues he won the title in the international Super 12 championship (today Super 14 ) in 2003 .
In 2005, his services to rugby were honored with his admission to the International Rugby Hall of Fame .
