Todd Stanger Clever (born January 16, 1983 in Palm Springs , California ) is an American rugby union player. He played as captain for the United States national team in the position of winger . Clever currently plays for the major league rugby club Austin Elite.
Career
youth
Clever first played rugby at Santa Teresa High School in San Jose . In the years 2000-2002 he was also used in the U19 national team of the United States. Later he played for the University of Nevada in Reno (2002-2004).
Club career
Clever began his professional career in New Zealand in 2006 with the North Harbor provincial team . In 2009 he played in the South African franchise Lions and was the first US American to try the Super 14 competition. That happened on March 28, 2009 in the Lions game against the Hurricanes . In June 2010 Clever switched to the Japanese top league club Suntory Sungoliath with whom he won the top league final against the Panasonic Wild Knights in March 2012. In the same month Clever signed a contract with league rivals NTT Shining Arcs. In September 2015 he then moved to the English Aviva Premiership club Newcastle Falcons for one season . In 2016, Todd Clever signed a contract as a player and co-owner with Austin Elite, a founding member of the newly created Major League Rugby, which began playing in 2018. From 2016 to 2018 he also played for the Austin Huns.
National team career
Todd Clever made his debut for the United States national team against Argentina in August 2003 at the age of twenty. He took part in the World Championships in 2007 and 2011 and won the Men's Plate Final (3rd place) with his team in 2005 and the Men's Bowl Final (5th place) in the Churchill Cup in 2009 and 2011 . Clever received numerous awards and became the flagship of the USA Eagles as captain. In June 2017, Clever announced the end of his national team career. He also played for the United States 7-a-side rugby team from 2004 to 2009 .
