The Gala Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club from Galashiels founded in 1875 . The club plays its home games in Netherdale Stadium, which has a capacity of 2,000. The club plays in the Scottish National League Division One and the Border League .
history
The association was created because the growing textile industry in Gala (and in general in the Scottish border area ) brought a lot of workers (especially from Yorkshire ) and brought the sport of cricket with them. Since cricket is more of a summer sport, you needed a sport for the winter, so the Gala RFC was founded.
In 1883 they took part in the first 7 tournament in Melrose , where they were only subject to the host in the final. Within a year Gala and several other clubs from the Scottish border area started their own 7-a-side tournaments. In 1994 these were combined to form the Border Sevens Circuit League, the winners of this tournament are called "Kings of the Sevens". Gala has won this tournament twice so far, in 1994 and 2004.
Gala has spawned 21 Scottish internationals: Geoff Cross, Peter Brown, David Leslie, Jim Aitken, Jock Turner, Duncan Paterson, Gregor Townsend, Derek White, Nathan Hines , Chris Paterson , Drew Gill, John Frame, Arthur Brown, Nairn McEwan, Ken Lawrie, Gordon Dickson, Peter Dods, Michael Dods, Bob Wilson, Tom Elliott and Stevie Scott.
