Roffrid de Insula

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roffrid de Insula († May 30, 1210 in San Germano ) was abbot of the Monte Cassino monastery from 1188 to 1210 .

Roffrid, who had previously administered the office of treasurer, was elected abbot of Monte Cassino on July 9, 1188 and shortly before December 1, 1188 by Pope Clement III. appointed cardinal priest by SS. Marcellino e Pietro. In 1191 Emperor Heinrich VI stayed. in Monte Cassino and confirmed earlier privileges of the Sicilian kings and Lothars III. to the monastery. However, since Roffrid was on the side of Heinrich's opponent Tankred of Lecce , he was taken prisoner to Germany by the emperor. In his place, the dean and Staufer supporter Adenulf ran the monastery. In 1192 Roffrid returned to Italy. In the following years he fought for Heinrich in the north of Apulia against the vassals Tankreds, where he supported the Hohenstaufen military leaders Berthold von Künßberg and Diepold von Schweinspeunt . After Heinrich was crowned King of Sicily in 1194, he rewarded Roffrid for his help with weapons.

He died on May 30, 1210 in San Germano .
