Asprey is a traditional jeweler based in London , England . The company is part of Asprey International Limited , based in the Cayman Islands .

history

The company was founded in Mitcham , South London in 1781 by William Asprey as a screen printing company. William's son Charles and his grandson, also named Charles, expanded the company into metal art . In 1841, the elder Charles partnered with a London stationery shop on Bond Street . In 1847 the Asprey family ended that partnership and moved to 167 New Bond Street, where the business is still today.

Asprey's range initially included jewelry and items for interior design. The company consolidated its position through acquisitions. In 1859 the company was auctioned off by Edwards, an award-winning manufacturer of travel necessaire and purveyor to the royal court. The company acquired the Alfred Club at 22 Albemarle Street, adjacent to the store on New Bond Street, which resulted in Asprey having two entrances. Asprey won a gold medal at the London World's Fair in 1862 . In the same year Queen Victoria awarded the royal court title .

The business flourished during the 19th century and another court title was bestowed on by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII , who would remain an important customer of Asprey throughout his life. Customers included the British royal family and the aristocracy as well as foreign nobility and dignitaries.

During the 20th century, Asprey grew considerably, the company acquired new manufacturing facilities and hired silversmiths, goldsmiths, jewelers and watchmakers. Asprey employed artisans, including Ernest Betjeman, father of the great poet John Betjeman , and one of the most respected designers of his day.

In the 1920s, orders came from all over the world. From American millionaires like John Pierpont Morgan to rulers like the Maharaja of Patiala , who commissioned a huge teak suitcase for his respective wives. Each suitcase was lined with blue velvet and equipped with washing and bathing utensils made of solid silver and an ornate tiger head as a gargoyle . Asprey cigarette cases were popular with younger customers, as were Art Deco accessories like watches , razor blades, and automatic pencil sharpeners .

The accession of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1953 Asprey produced the Coronation Year Gold Collection of a 18-carat gold dessert, coffee and liqueur service with a total weight of nearly 27 pounds . This collection was exhibited in the Bond Street shop in April 1953 and then toured the United States.

Asprey received the court title from Prince Charles as its supplier.

Products

Asprey's product range extends from jewelry , jewels , rings , brooches , silver goods , leather goods , watches to silk scarves . In addition to the head office in London, there were further branches in Berkshire , St. Moritz , New York , Beverly Hills , Miami , Tokyo , Osaka , Nagoya and Dubai in 2009 .
