The 2002 Formula 1 World Championship was the 53rd season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 17 races in the period from March 3, 2002 to October 13, 2002. Michael Schumacher won his 5th driver title. Ferrari won the constructors' championship for the fourth time in a row.

Changes in 2002

Regulations

At the beginning of the season, no changes were made to the regulations. a. Ferrari allowed the first races of the season to be contested with the F2001 vehicle, which was successful last year . Developments during the season, however, meant that after the season a stable order was prohibited.

Racetracks

The racing calendar remained largely unchanged compared to 2001, only the French Grand Prix and the Great Britain Grand Prix changed places.

The Hockenheimring , the venue for the German Grand Prix , was extensively rebuilt after the 2001 race : only the route around the home straight and the “Motodrom” remained, while the rest of the route was completely rebuilt. The traditional route with the forest straights was a thing of the past.

The Nürburgring , where the European Grand Prix took place as in previous years , was also rebuilt and the “Mercedes Arena” section added.

Teams

After long and extensive preparation, the car manufacturer Toyota launched its own racing team, Toyota Racing .

The former Benetton team, which had already been acquired by the French automotive group Renault in March 2000 , started in 2002 under the name Renault F1 Team .

The Formula 1 Team Prost went bankrupt after the 2001 season and ended its Formula 1 involvement. The British racing team Phoenix Finance , supported by Arrows , tried to take part in the 2002 season with a Prost chassis and older Hart engines, but did not receive approval.

Engines

Minardi announced the specially refined Ford engines, and instead used originally by Peugeot developed AsiaTech engines that had run in the previous year at Arrows. Arrows, on the other hand, was equipped with Cosworth engines, which Ford's own Jaguar team passed on to customer teams for the first time this year.

tires

McLaren switched from Bridgestone to Michelin tires. Toyota, as a new competitor, also used Michelin tires.

driver

Mika Häkkinen ended his Formula 1 career at the end of the 2001 season. Hakkinen's place at McLaren was taken over by Kimi Räikkönen , who had previously started for Sauber . Raikkonen's place at Sauber was taken over by Felipe Massa , who contested his first Formula 1 season with it. Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella swapped cockpits: Trulli started for Renault from the 2002 season , while Fisichella competed for Jordan . The second starting place at Jordan was taken over by the Formula 1 newcomer Takuma Satō . The second previous Jordan driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen switched to Arrows.

Jos Verstappen , who previously started for Arrows, and the previous Minardi drivers Tarso Marques and Fernando Alonso did not get a new Formula 1 racing team in the 2002 season. Alonso became a test driver for the Renault team in 2002. The previous Prost drivers Jean Alesi and Gastón Mazzacane ended their Formula 1 careers. Mark Webber for Minardi and Allan McNish and, after a year break, Mika Salo for Toyota were new to the starting field of the Grand Prix .
