The Renault R202 was a racing car owned by the Renault team. Two cars of this type took part in all 17 races of the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship .

background

The Benetton racing team was sold to Renault as early as 2000 . Renault was Benetton's engine supplier until 2001 and the team was renamed in 2002. Benetton had been in Formula 1 since 1986 and was formed from the Toleman team that had been in Formula 1 since 1981 . Sales did not change the distribution of tasks. The engines continued to be developed and serviced in Viry-Châtillon , France, and the chassis department was still in Enstone, England .

technology

With the R202, Renault had a racing car that drove in the midfield. The 10-cylinder V- engine with a cylinder bank angle of 111 degrees had an aluminum housing and a displacement of 2992.9 cc. With an output of 588 kW (800 hp) and a maximum speed of 17,000 rpm, the drivers criticized it as too weak. The injection system was supplied by Magneti Marelli. The engine was 620 mm long, 540 mm wide, 380 mm high and weighed 95 kg. The sequential six-speed gearbox manufactured by Renault / X-Trac was installed lengthways and switched semi-automatically electro-hydraulically.

The monocoque chassis was a sandwich construction with top layers made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The wheelbase was 3100 mm, the track width 1400 mm, the tank volume 145 l. The car weighed a total of 473 kg. The suspension had torsion bar springs at the front and rear. The internal dampers (three at the front, two at the back) were actuated via push rods (“pushrod”) and rocker arms. A total of seven chassis were built. Mike Gascoyne was the technical director .

driver

For the 2002 season , two experienced drivers, Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button , were hired. The young Fernando Alonso also joined the team as a test driver.

2002 season

The qualifying duel clearly went to Jarno Trulli with 12: 5. In 17 double appearances, Renault made it into the classification 20 times. In contrast, there are 14 failures, nine due to technical defects and five due to accidents and turning. With a possible 2180 race laps, the Renault 1696 drove, which brought them to fifth place in the reliability statistics. With 23 world championship points, Renault finished fourth at the end of the season. Jenson Button finished seventh in the drivers' world championship with 14 points and Jarno Trulli was eighth with nine points.

Painting

The cars were painted in the blue and white of the cigarette sponsor, the yellow of Renault and a French mineral oil company. There were also start numbers 14 (Jarno Trulli) and 15 (Jenson Button) in white.
