The BAR 004 was a racing car from the BAR Honda team . Two cars of this type took part in all 17 races of the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship .

background

In the winter, team principal Craig Pollock was replaced by David Richards . Richards, who previously worked in the World Rally Championship and Formula 1 at Benetton , should help the team to succeed. Because of the millions of dollars from British American Tobacco (BAR), the lack of success was not due to a budget that was too low. After Richards got an overview, engineers, designers and technicians were moved or replaced. In order to ensure long-term planning, the new boss negotiated an exclusive three-year contract with engine supplier Honda , valid from 2003. The cooperation with drivers Jacques Villeneuve and Richards turned out to be difficult, as it became clear in the current year. Nevertheless, Villeneuve signed for the coming season.

technology

With the type 004, BAR had built a racing car that could drive for world championship points. The 10-cylinder V- engine with a cylinder bank angle of 94 degrees had an aluminum housing and a displacement of 2996.6 cm³. With an output of 614 kW (835 hp) and a maximum speed of 18,200 rpm, it was one of the more powerful of its year. The engine was 620 mm long, 525 mm wide, 440 mm high and weighed 96 kg. The electronics and the injection were supplied by Honda. The sequential seven-speed gearbox manufactured by BAR / X-Trac was installed lengthways and switched semi-automatically electro-hydraulically.

The monocoque chassis consisted of sandwich panels with a honeycomb core with outer layers made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The wheelbase was 3070 mm, the track width 1440 mm and the tank volume was 133 liters. The car weighed a total of 485 kg. The suspension with torsion bar springs had two internal dampers at the front and rear, which were operated via push rods and rocker arms. A total of nine chassis were built. Technical director was Jock Clear .

driver

For the 2002 season, Jacques Villeneuve was a world champion and Olivier Panis was a Grand Prix winner for the team.

2002 season

The qualifying duel Villeneuve against Panis ended 10: 7. In 17 double appearances, BAR made it into the ranking 17 times. On the other hand there are 17 failures due to technical defects and accidents. With a possible 2180 racing laps, the cars drove 1482, which brought them to ninth place in the reliability statistics. With 7 world championship points, BAR finished eighth at the end of the season. Jacques Villeneuve finished 12th with four points and Olivier Panis 14th with three points in the drivers' world championship .

Painting

The cars were painted white and given the sponsor stickers of a cigarette brand. There were also start numbers 11 (Villeneuve) and 12 (Panis).
