The Jordan EJ12 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of Jordan Grand Prix for the 2002 season . It was the twelfth car of Jordan overall and a direct successor to the Jordan EJ11 .

General

After the rather sobering 2001 season, Jordan had significantly less funds in 2002 than in the previous years. The car was supposed to make the powerful Honda engine more effective through new aerodynamics and weight savings. Contrary to all hopes, the EJ12 proved to be not very competitive from the start. Both drivers rarely made it into the points. Giancarlo Fisichella scored the most points, finishing three fifth and one sixth place. Sato needed the time up to the last season and home Grand Prix to score, but finished fifth there. In the end, Jordan finished sixth in the constructors' championship with nine points, leaving Arrows , Jaguar , Minardi , BAR , which also competed with Honda engines, and the new Toyota team behind. Victories, podiums or even world championship titles seemed to have moved into the unattainable distance.

technology

For the 2002 season, Jordan developed a rather unconventional vehicle that was particularly noticeable with its very narrow side pods and deeply lowered nose. The front wing construction of the previous year's Jordan EJ11 with two 45 degrees inclined cross braces was retained. The weight lost due to the new side pods should benefit the speed and better use of the engine's power. The tires were again obtained from Bridgestone , the gasoline, unlike in previous years, no longer from Elf Aquitaine , but from Liqui Moly .

As with the previous EJ11 model, Jordan used a seven-speed gearbox with an additional reverse gear and engine from Honda. The Japanese company provided the Honda RA002E 3.0 l ten-cylinder, which British American Racing also used in the BAR 004 . The unit developed between 835 and 865 hp at up to 18,800 revolutions per minute. Each cylinder had four valves. The Honda PGM-FI system was used as the injection system and the Honda PGM-IG as the ignition system. Spark plugs were obtained from NGK Spark Plug .

Sponsors and liveries

The vehicle was kept almost entirely in yellow - only the front and rear wings and the underside of the side pods and the rims were black. With the new season, DHL and Deutsche Post became the main sponsors and appeared accordingly on the vehicle nose, on the side pods, on the air scoop and on the side of the cockpit. The previous main sponsor, Benson & Hedges , took a back seat and only appeared on the front and rear wings and the top of the vehicle nose. In addition to engine supplier Honda , there were also some smaller sponsors.

For the first time since 1997, no drawing of an animal adorned the sides of the vehicle nose. In countries where tobacco advertising was prohibited, the letters N, S, and H were masked off in black in the Benson & Hedges logo - the phrase “Be On Edge” appeared.

driver

For the season pledged Eddie Jordan two new drivers. The already experienced Italian Giancarlo Fisichella drove the first car with the starting number 9, while the newcomer Takuma Sato , who had been brokered by Honda, drove the second driver with the starting number 10. As in the previous year, the Brazilian Ricardo Zonta remained a test driver. Fisichella was almost invariably superior to his teammate in both qualifying and the race and scored a large part of the total points for the season with 7. Sato's success only came at the home Grand Prix in Suzuka, when he finished fifth after a strong qualifying and was celebrated by the home crowd for this.

At the end of the season, Fisichella stayed with the team, while Takuma Sato moved to British American Racing , which would later become the Honda factory team. His place was taken in 2003 by the Irishman Ralph Firman , who was represented in two races by Zsolt Baumgartner from Hungary. Zonta's contract was not renewed.
