Rosso Corsa , Italian rosso , "red", and corsa , "race", is a red color used for vehicle paintwork in motorsport. It is traditionally used by Italian teams.
Importance of color
It should be emphasized that the traditional use of the Rosso Corsa has no relation to the nationality of the vehicle manufacturer or the driver, but only to the nationality of the team that uses the vehicle. Examples of vehicles from Italian production that competed in the colors of other nations:
- At the 1961 Belgian Grand Prix , local hero Olivier Gendebien finished fourth in a Ferrari 156 . The vehicle was painted yellow, referring to the Belgian nationality of the vehicle owner Gendebien, who started as a private driver.
- The Briton John Surtees contested the last two rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1964 in a Ferrari 158 , which was painted in white with blue vertical stripes - the typical color scheme for US teams. Surtees' car was used by the American NART team.
More recently, Rosso Corsa has been mainly associated with the Ferrari brand or reduced to its quality as its brand color. This misunderstanding is based, among other things, on the fact that over time almost all racing teams in Formula 1 have completely subordinated the color scheme of their cars to the requirements of the respective main sponsor and thus no longer compete in the national colors. The Scuderia Ferrari , however, held for decades at the Rosso Corsa firm, first drove for no apparent main sponsor and later with those whose color scheme is compatible with the dominant red ( Marlboro , Santander ).
