Weichai Power ( Weichai Diesel Engine Factory until 1992 ) was founded in 1953 and was one of the first diesel engine factories in the PRC . The main business areas are the assembly of prime movers (including engines, transmissions and axles), commercial vehicles and automotive electronics.

The company is owned by the Weichai Holding Group , which in turn is part of Shandong Heavy Industry . Weichai Power was part of Sinotruk until 2006 .

Weichai Power manufactures engines based on the design of the Austrian Steyr Daimler Puch and develops them further. Weichai Power has three branches abroad, in France since 2009, in Singapore since 2010 (together with Moteurs Baudouin ) and also in the USA since 2010.

Engine construction is located in Weifang, in Xi'an the construction of heavy commercial vehicles, in Chongqing the construction of large engines and light commercial vehicles and in Yangzhou automotive electronics and parts.

In Germany, the company became known in 2013 after taking over 25% of the forklift company Kion for a price of 671 million euros. By July 2016, the share was increased to 40%.

The company also holds 70% of the shares in Linde Hydraulics .

In 2018, Weichai entered into a strategic partnership with the Canadian fuel cell manufacturer Ballard Power Systems . Weichai acquired a 19.9 percent stake in Ballard for $ 163 million. As part of this partnership, Weichai and Ballard want to serve the Chinese market with fuel cells for buses, trucks and forklifts.
