Josif Dawidowitsch Dorfman (also Iossif, Iosif, Josef; born May 1, 1952 in Zhytomyr ) is a Ukrainian - French chess player and trainer .

Life

Dorfman is a multiple participant in USSR championships , which he won once - in 1977 in Leningrad - together with Boris Gulko ; the due playoff for the title ended in a draw (+1 = 4 −1). In the 1980s, Dorfman was Garry Kasparov's second in his first four World Cup matches against Anatoly Karpov . In 1989, Dorfman took part in the Berlin summer and finished second behind Viktor Gavrikov .

Dorfman has lived in France since around 1990, was French individual champion in 1998 and runner-up in 2000. Dorfman is also considered a successful chess trainer, among his students was the world class French player Étienne Bacrot . He published two books: The Chess Method (2001) and The Critical Moment (2002).

Josif Dorfman was awarded the title of International Master by the World Chess Federation FIDE in 1977 , and one year later that of Grand Master . Since 2004 he has held the title of FIDE Senior Trainer. Its Elo rating is 2560 (as of July 2016), its highest to date was 2617 from July to December 2002.

National team

In 1998 , 2002 and 2004 Dorfman played at the Chess Olympiads for the French national team. At the European Team Championship he took part in 1977 with the Soviet team (which won the competition) and in 2005 with the French team.

In the Soviet Union Dorfman played in the army team until 1980, then with Trud Moscow, with whom he won the Soviet club championship in 1982. In France, Dorfman played in the 1990s with Lyon-Oyonnax Échecs, later until 2006 with CEMC Monaco, with which he became French team champion in 2002 , and from 2009 to 2011 with Évry Grand Roque . In the 2014/15 season he played for Grasse Echecs. From 2000 to 2003 Dorfman was active in the German Federal Chess League for the Hamburger SK . In the Austrian Bundesliga he last played in the 2002/03 season for SV Tschaturanga Neubau, for which he was also registered in the following two seasons, but was not used. Dorfman took part in a total of five times in the European Club Cup and won it in 1984 with Trud Moscow, in 1993 and 1994 with Lyon-Oyonnax Échecs.
