The list of French chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the French Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:

General

In local chess, 47 grandmasters (including Marie Sebag as the only woman ), 115 international masters (including four women with Silvia Collas , Pauline Guichard , Sophie Milliet and Almira Scripcenco ), 9 women's grandmasters and 18 international women's champions are eligible to play for the French Chess Federation . Eleven grandmasters, six international masters and two international women masters are no longer eligible to play for the French Chess Federation, three grandmasters, four international masters, one women's grandmaster and one honorary women's grandmaster have already passed away. Alexander Alekhine was from 1927 to 1935 and from 1937 to 1946 world champion , Boris Spassky 1969-1972.

In correspondence chess, 8 French players have acquired the title of Grand Master, 24 that of an Honored International Master, 32 that of an International Master (including two women with Melissa Broudin and Jacqueline Roos ), two that of a Women's Grand Master and two that of an International Women's Master . Of these, one Grand Master, one Honored International Master, three International Master, one Grand Master of Women and one International Master of Women have already passed away. Christophe Léotard won the 19th World Correspondence Chess Championship.

The French individual championships were played 93 times and the French women’s championship 64 times. The record champion is Étienne Bacrot with eight titles, Sophie Milliet and Almira Scripcenco won the women's competition most often with six titles each.

Another 16 French players had a historic Elo rating of over 2,499 before June 1971.
