Jules Arnous de Rivière (born May 4, 1830 in Nantes , † September 11, 1905 in Paris ) was one of the strongest chess players in France in the 19th century . He was also a chess journalist.

Career

In 1858, Arnous met Paul Morphy in Paris . With this he played many training games in the Café de la Régence . In the following years he won several duels, so in 1860 in London with 5-2 against Thomas W. Barnes, in the same year in Paris with 7-1 against the French Paul Journoud and in 1867 in Paris with 2-0 against the Hungarian Löwenthal . In 1883 he only just lost 4-5 to Chigorin in Paris . In 1867 a tournament with the strongest chess players of the time was held in Paris during the second world exhibition . Here Rivière took an excellent place in midfield in sixth place.

Others

Parallel to this tournament, a premiere took place in the Café de la Régence: For the first time women played chess in public. Rivière played a blind game together with Neumann against the advising nobles Princess Marat, Duchess de la Tremoille, Marshal Countess Renault de Saint Jean de la Tremoille and Marquise de Colbert-Chabanais. The women won the game.

The best historical Elo rating for Rivières was 2563. This was calculated for August 1883.

Rivière was also active as a chess writer and chess journalist. He edited the chess magazine La Régence for a while .
