Dawid Markelowitsch Janowski (born May 25 . Jul / 6. June  1868 greg. In Wołkowysk , Grodno , Russian Empire ; † 15. January 1927 in Hyères ) was a Polish chess player .

He was considered one of the best attacking players at the beginning of the 20th century and was known for playing unconditionally for a profit. This trait was also evident outside of chess. So he lost a cash prize that he had won at a tournament in Monte Carlo , back in a very short time at roulette .

Janowski moved to Paris in the late 1880s . In the Café de la Regence he developed into a strong chess player. In 1894 he took part in an international tournament for the first time. In Leipzig he finished 6th to 7th at the 9th Congress of the German Chess Federation . Space. He then played for France for 29 years.

His great successes during this time include the victories in Monte Carlo in 1901, in the championship tournament of the German Chess Federation (13th DSB-Kogress) in Hanover in 1902 in front of Harry Nelson Pillsbury and in the 1905 tournament in Barmen . At the tournament in Ostend in 1905 he came in shared 2nd place behind Géza Maróczy and received a beauty prize for his game against Siegbert Tarrasch .

In 1909 he played two competitions against Emanuel Lasker in Paris , but they were not about the world chess championship . After Janowski had drawn the first 2: 2, the chess patron Leo Nardus financed a second match, which Janowski clearly lost with 1: 7 in two draws . However, he was not yet convinced of Lasker's chess superiority and demanded revenge. This was played in 1910 in Berlin as a world championship fight and ended in a complete disaster for Janowski, who lost 8-0 in three draws. The chess journalist Georg Marco summarized the course of the match with the words Either Lasker won or Janowski lost .

From 1916 to 1925 he stayed in the USA . From then on, his playing strength decreased due to health problems and he suffered from tuberculosis . He finished last at the 1924 New York tournament .

His best historical rating was 2776 in July 1904. After this controversial rating, he was in first place in the world rankings from May to September 1904.
