Georg Marco (born November 29, 1863 in Chernivtsi , † August 29, 1923 in Vienna ) was an Austrian chess player and journalist .
Life
After Marco moved to Vienna, he took an active part in Viennese chess life. Success in chess cafes and clubs increased his reputation to such an extent that he also took part in international tournaments : among other things, he finished fourth in Dresden in 1892, first in Vienna in 1895 (his best result), in Vienna in 1897 third, in Monte-Carlo in 1903 fifth, Third in Vienna 1903, second to third in Moscow in 1907, third in Stockholm in 1912.
Marco drew two competitions with Carl Schlechter in Vienna : 1893 (+0 = 10 −0) and 1894 (+4 = 3 −4). He won in Karlsbad in 1901 against Adolf Albin 6: 4 (+4 = 4 −2). During the Atlantic crossing from the tournament in Cambridge Springs in 1904 back to Europe, he played a theme competition ( rejected King's Gambit ) against Dawid Janowski , which he lost 2: 4 (+2 = 0-4) on the Steamer Pretoria .
He achieved his best historical rating of 2673 in June 1906. At that time he was one of the ten best players in the world.
Marco was considered a draw master because of his very solid playing style . Because of his body he was also jokingly called "grand, fat and broad master" .
He became very well known in the chess world, but above all as a publicist. He published tournament books for the tournaments in Vienna 1903 and 1908, Ostend 1906, Karlsbad 1907, Baden bei Wien 1914 a. a. For the Lasker - Tarrasch competition in 1908 he published a competition book. In 1924 a book on chess composition , which he wrote together with E. Mazel, appeared posthumously : Meister des Problem , Vienna 1924. He also wrote some chess problems himself.
Until his death he acted as the "secretary" of the Vienna chess club . From 1898 to 1914 Marco was also editor-in-chief of the renowned Viennese chess newspaper . He edited a chess column in the weekly magazine Das Interestante Blatt .
