The list of French champions in chess lists the title holders of the official championships of France . The titles are shown separately in several categories.
Unofficial championships
Before the official championships were introduced, five previous tournaments were played, namely in 1880, 1881 and 1883 the tournoi national (national tournament) and in 1903 and 1914 the Championnat des amateurs (amateur championship).

Ladies
The women's championship has been played since 1924. Initially, only French citizens were allowed to receive the title , at least for women . The native Latvian Paulette Schwartzmann and the Italian Alice Tonini won several times before she obtained her French citizenship on December 21, 1932, whereby the title holder and the tournament winner were not identical, in these cases both are listed.
