Tarık Ziya Ekinci

Tarık Ziya Ekinci (born February 18, 1925 in Lice , Diyarbakır Province ) is a Kurdish doctor, politician and author from Turkey .

Tarık Ziya Ekinci attended high school in Diyarbakır and then went to Istanbul to study medicine. In 1949 he finished his studies. As a doctor he worked in Siverek , Diyarbakır and Lice. In 1957 he completed his specialist training in internal medicine and settled in Diyarbakır. For several years he was chairman of the Medical Association of Diyarbakır, Mardin and Siirt . He published several medical articles and organized various medical congresses.

In addition to medicine, Tarık Ziya Ekinci was also active in politics. He campaigned for a democratic solution to the Kurdish question. From 1957 to 1960 he was a member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi . He then moved to Türkiye İşçi Partisi (TİP). He co-founded the Socialist Cultural Association (tr: Sosyalist Kültür Derneği) and was the chairman of the branch in Diyarbakır.

From 1965 to 1969 he was a member of the TİP for Diyarbakır in the Turkish Parliament . Within the TİP he took on several posts and was also the general secretary. In parliament he was the group leader of the TİP. On September 16, 1967, Kurdish members of the TİP denounced the imbalance between West and East in the country. This took place in the form of so-called Eastern Meetings . These meetings prepared the basis for the establishment of the Devrimci Doğu Kültür Ocakları (DDKO). Tarık Ziya Ekinci was actively involved in founding the DDKO.

In the 1970s he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for Kurdish propaganda under Article 142 of the Criminal Code, of which he served two years. After the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , he was arrested several times. In 1982 he fled to France , where he worked as a doctor until 1989. He returned to Turkey on June 30, 1989, served the remainder of the sentence and settled in Istanbul . He is the founder of the organization Democratic Reconciliation and Initiative to Solve the Kurdish Question DEMOS for short (tr: Democracy Uzlaşma ve Kürt Sorununda Çözüm Girişimi ).

Tarık Ziya Ekinci is the author of several books and writes in several newspapers and magazines.
