Gyula Kluger

Gyula Kluger [ ˈɟulɒ ˈkluɡɛr ] (born January 15, 1914 in Sátoraljaújhely , † September 23, 1994 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian chess player .

Kluger was a nephew of István Fazekas , who was an international master in both local and correspondence chess . This is how he came to play chess at an early age. In 1935 he reached seventh place in the championship of Hungary in Tataóváros and received the separately awarded Hungarian championship title . Between 1937 and 1946 no official games of him are known.

From 1946 he participated again in Hungarian championships and also took part in international tournaments. In 1953 he was runner-up in Hungary. In 1954 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master. 1956/57 he won the Challenger tournament in Hastings. In 1954 and 1960 he took part in the Chess Olympiad , where he achieved the third-best individual result on the second reserve board in 1960. He was appointed to the Hungarian national team more than 50 times and, among other things, reached third place at the European team championships in Hamburg in 1965 .

His victories against the world-class players Svetozar Gligorić (Chess Olympiad 1954, Amsterdam), Viktor Kortschnoi (Bucharest 1954), Gideon Ståhlberg (Bucharest 1954) and Michail Tal (Kislowodsk 1964) were remarkable .
