He was also involved in local politics on a voluntary basis for twelve years.

For decades he was active in chess organizations. After 1947 he worked for several years as a youth warden in Lower Franconia . From 1954 on he was chairman of the Lower Franconian Chess Association until he moved to Nuremberg in October 1957. Since 1953 Diel was press attendant in the Bavarian Chess Federation . After 1971 he was also a public relations officer in the German Chess Federation until he gave up these two functions in 1986.

He became known as the editor of various chess magazines . In 1950 and 1951, he published the magazine of the Lower Franconia Association, Das Königliche Spiel , in Aschaffenburg, where he initially looked after a chess column as editor of the Main-Echoes . In addition, since 1949 he worked for the Bavarian Chess Newspaper , which merged with The Royal Game in 1951 to form the Bavarian association magazine , Das meisterliche Schach , whose main responsibility at the time was Efim Bogoljubow . In response to the success of the magazine, the DSB federal board decided to distribute this organ nationwide under the traditional title Deutsche Schachblätter . The magazine appeared under this name from 1962 to 1986.
