Gottlieb Machate

Gustav Gottlieb Walter Machate (born November 20, 1904 in Breslau ; † May 27, 1974 in Stuttgart ) was a German chess player .

Machate won the championship of Silesia in 1926 and 1937 . He took part with Germany in the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Budapest in 1926 . He lived in Stuttgart after the Second World War and won the Württemberg Championships in 1947 . Machate took part in all German championships four times in a row between 1947 and 1950 , and came third in Weidenau in 1947 . In 1948 in Essen , Machate was also third ahead of Lothar Schmid in the German Championship, which Wolfgang Unzicker won ahead of Georg Kieninger . Further participations followed in 1949 and 1950, each in Bad Pyrmont . Because of these achievements, he was allowed to use the title of " National Master ".

Machate achieved his best historical rating of 2569 in October 1948, placing it in 61st place in the world rankings (which he had previously achieved in May 1928).
