Artur Hennings (born July 11, 1940 , † November 12, 2003 in Schwerin ) was a German chess player in the GDR .

Life

Hennings caused a sensation in 1963 when he defeated the then leading GDR player Wolfgang Uhlmann in the GDR championship . In 1965 he became an international master . In 1968 he took part in the Chess Olympiad in Lugano . Since then he has been one of the top players in the GDR. In 1968 in Lugano and 1970 in Siegen he played at the Chess Olympiads for the GDR. In the same year he won the bronze medal with the GDR team at the European Championships in Kapfenberg . Also in 1970 he won the GDR championship in blitz chess .

Further successes were made more difficult because the GDR withdrew from international chess for political reasons.

After reunification, he played a total of three years with the teams from Buna Halle (now USV Volksbank Halle ) and SC Bamberg in the German Chess League .

From 1994 he was active in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , where he was one of the strongest players and was able to qualify three times for the German individual championship.

Hennings died in 2003 after a long illness. Hennings' last Elo rating was 2260, and he had his highest rating of 2475 in 1971 and 1972.
