Margaret Leighton

Margaret Leighton (born February 26, 1922 in Barnt Green , Worcestershire , England , † January 13, 1976 in Chichester , Sussex , England) was a British actress .

Life

Margare Leighton was nominated four times for a Tony Award and won two Tony Awards for Broadway performances for "Best Actress in a Drama": 1957 for Separate Tables and 1962 for Tennessee Williams ' "The Night of the Iguana". In the same category she was also nominated for Shakespeare 's Much Ado About Nothing (1960) and Tchin-Tchin (1963).

For her role in Hamlet (1970) she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in a Supporting Actress in a Drama. For four episodes of the series Dr. Kildare (1966), she was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Leading Actress in a Drama.

For her role as Mrs. Maudsley in The Go-Between (1970), she won the British Film Award for "Best Supporting Actress". She received a British Film Academy Award nomination for Best British Actress for her role as Valerie Carrington in Carrington, VC (1955) and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1971 for Der Mittler .

In 1971 Leighton was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis , but continued to work. Even after 1975, when she could no longer walk, she did not stop playing. She died in Sussex the following year.

Leighton was married three times: from 1947 to 1955 with the British publisher Max Reinhardt, from 1957 to 1961 with the actor Laurence Harvey and from 1964 until her death with the actor Michael Wilding .
