List of Belgian champions in chess

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Belgian champions in chess contains the winners of all Belgian individual championships.

General

The title of Belgian champion was first played in 1901. Up to 1913 the title was played four times, since 1921 the competition has been held annually, with a few exceptions. From 1921 to 1975 mostly two titles were awarded; on the one hand the title of Belgisch kampioen (Belgian champion), which only Belgian citizens could win, and on the other hand the title of Bondskampioen (association champion), which also foreign players residing in Belgium could win. In 1926, 1927, 1945, 1951 to 1953 and 1956 to 1961, the two titles were played in different tournaments, otherwise in a joint tournament. Since 1976 only the title of Belgisch kampioen has been awarded. The record champion is Albéric O'Kelly de Galway , who won the Belgian championship 13 times (he also won the association championship seven times).

The women's championship was first held in 1938. In the 1960s and 1970s the tournament was played sporadically, before and after (with one exception) annually. Until 2008, the women's title was played in a separate tournament, since 2009 the title has been awarded to the top-placed woman in an open tournament ( Championat Open ) held parallel to the Belgian championship . The competition is also open to foreign players residing in Belgium. The women's record champion is Louise Loeffler with six titles.
