Rafael Duailibe Leitão (born December 28, 1979 in São Luís ) is a Brazilian chess player .

Life

Leitão, Dortmund 1998

His greatest success so far was the U-18 youth world title in 1996. He was also the Brazilian champion in 2004, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

In 1998 he received the grandmaster title . He got 6.5 points from 11 games in the Open A of the Dortmund Chess Days 1998.

Leitão took part in the World Chess Cup four times ( 2005 , 2007 , 2009 and 2013 ), his best result here being reaching the second round in 2005 and 2013.

With the Brazilian national team, Leitão took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1996 , 2000 , 2002 , 2006 , 2010 , 2012 and 2014 and achieved the second-best individual result on the third board in 2006. He also participated with Brazil in the 2010 Team World Cup and the Pan American Team Championships in 2003 and 2009. He won the Pan American Team Championship with Brazil in 2009 and achieved the best individual results on the second board in both 2003 and 2009.

In December 2019, he topped the Brazilian Elo ranking.

Leitão also plays correspondence chess and has held the title correspondence chess grandmaster since 2012 .
