Vladimir Hakobjan ( Armenian Վլադիմիր Հակոբյան ; born December 7, 1971 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR ) is an Armenian chess grandmaster . The FIDE lists him as Vladimir Akopian . He is not to be confused with the younger Armenian-American grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian .

Surname

Hakobjan is better known as Vladimir Akopjan (in English transcription Vladimir Akopian) from Russian Владимир Акопян. In addition to the Russification that is common in the Soviet Union, this has to do with his place of birth. Hakobjan was born in Baku , the capital of what was then the Azerbaijani SSR , where the Cyrillic script was used, which does not reproduce the h . In addition, the name Hakob (the Armenian variant of Jacob ) is traditionally written in Russian Akop, and Akopjan is derived from it. As a representative of the Soviet Union at chess tournaments, he became known internationally under the Russified name form.

successes

Hakobjan was U16 world champion in Rio Gallegos in 1986 and U18 world champion in Puerto Rico in 1989 . In 1991 he won the Junior World Championship in Mamaia . After that, however, he was unable to reach the absolute top of the world. However, in 1996 he won the Berlin Summer Open . In 1996 and 1997 he was Armenian national champion. In the competition over six games, which took place between August 21 and August 28, 1999 in Las Vegas , he was defeated by Alexander Chalifman 2.5: 3.5.

At the FIDE Knockout World Cup in Tripoli in 2004 , he made it to the quarterfinals, where he was eliminated by Michael Adams .
