Alexander Alexandrowitsch Galkin ( Russian Александр Александрович Галкин ; born February 1, 1979 in Rostov-on-Don ) is a Russian grandmaster in chess .

Galkin won the Junior World Championship (U 20) in the Armenian capital Yerevan in 1999 . He won with 10.5 points from 13 games, half a point ahead of the later FIDE world champion Rustam Kasimjanov , who had entered the tournament as number one on the seeding list (the Armenians and today's world class followed on 3rd – 4th place Grand Master Levon Aronjan ).

In the same year Galkin was used in the Russian national team, at the 12th European Team Championships in Batumi , Georgia , he remained unbeaten on the fourth board and took fifth place with the team.

At the FIDE World Championships in 2000 and 2004, which were held in knock-out mode , Galkin failed early in each case: in 2000 in New Delhi he lost to the Ukrainian grandmaster Alexander Beliavsky in the second round , after the opening success against Alex Wohl . 2004 in Tripoli Galkin lost in the first round against the Bulgarian Alexandar Deltschew . Galkin took part in the 2007 World Chess Cup , but failed in the second round to Vasyl Ivanchuk .

In the Russian team championship Galkin played in 1994 with Ladja Azov , 1996 with Don-Sdjuschor Rostov-on-Don , 1998, 2001 and 2002 with University Maikop , 1999 with master Chimik Beloretschensk , 2003 and 2004 with Norilski Nikel Norilsk , 2005 and 2006 for the Chess Federation Moscow , 2007 and 2008 for economist-1 Saratov . In 2009 he played for CA Mérida Patrimonio-Ajoblanco in the Spanish team championship , and has also played in Turkey. He took part in the European Club Cup in 1999 with Chimik Beloretschensk , in 2003 with Norilski Nikel Norilsk and in 2007 and 2008 with Ekonomist-1 Saratow .

Galkin is listed as inactive at FIDE (as of May 2016) because he did not play any rated games after the 2013/14 Turkish team championship. He was last among the top 100 players in the Elo world rankings in April 2006.
