Basic position of the Kalashnikov variant after 4.… e7 – e5 5. Nd4 – b5 d7 – d6

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

The Kalashnikov variant is a variant of the Sicilian Defense , an opening in the game of chess . It is classified in the ECO code under the key B32 and is created according to the moves ( see also : chess notation ):

1. e2-e4 c7-c5
2. Ng1-f3 Nb8-c6
3. d2-d4 c5xd4
4. Nf3xd4 e7-e5

The variant is related to the Svezhnikov system , in which the moves 4.… Ng8 – f6 5. Nb1 – c3 are interposed, and can merge into this. With his last move, Black attacks the knight on d4, who now has to move again. Since the hasty 5. Nd4xc6 b7xc6, as in a famous game between Alexander McDonnell and Louis Charles Mahe De La Bourdonnais, only strengthens the black center , 5. Nd4 – b5 is the main line.

5.… d7 – d6 now prevents the unpleasant Nb5 – d6 +.

Only now has the actual Kalashnikov variant been reached.

The alternative is the Löwenthal variant 5.… a7 – a6 6. Nb5 – d6 + Bf8xd6 7. Qd1xd6 Qd8 – f6. Now 8. Qd6xf6, 8. Qd6 – d1, 8. Qd6 – a3 or 8. Qd6 – c7 !? possible.

6. c2-c4

White chooses the so-called Maróczy setup. The pawn on c4 is supposed to prevent the counterattack d6 – d5, after which Black would stand well.

6. Nb1 – c3 a7 – a6 7. Nb5 – a3 b7 – b5 8. Nc3 – d5 Ng8 – f6 9. Bc1 – g5 would lead to the main line of the Sveshnikov system . Black can with 8.… Ng8 – e7 or 8.… Nc6 – e7 !? differ.

6. ... Bf8-e7 Black plans by Le7-g5 followed by Lg5xc1, his bad against the white good runner to replace.

7. Nb1 – c3 a7 – a6 8. Nb5 – a3 Bc8 – e6 9. Bf1 – e2 Be7 – g5 10. Na3 – c2 Brings the knight back into play. On c2 he covers the d4 square, which could serve as an outpost for the black knight on c6 . Conquering the d6 pawn is not recommended: After 10. Bxg5 Qxg5 11. Qxd6 ?? Black has a winning position. 11.… Rd8 12. Qc5 Qd2 + 13. Kf3 Qxb2.

10.… Bg5xc1 11. Ra1xc1 Ng8 – f6 12. 0–0 0–0 White can now try to conquer the backward pawn d6, for example with Qd2 and Rfd1. This is defended with Qb8! and Rfd8. The black queen can later control an important diagonal from a7. The typical Sicilian approach with b7 – b5 is also possible to attack the c4 pawn. Both sides have an outpost on the d-file for their knights: White on d5 and Black on d4. If a jumper can stay there permanently, this is very uncomfortable for the respective opponent.

Anand - Rəcəbov, Dortmund 2003 is another example role.
