Darrell Chambers (born April 3, 1961 in Detroit ) is a retired American boxer .

Career

Amateur career

Darrell Chambers was one of a group of Detroit teenagers who began boxing in Detroit in the 1970s and trained to be excellent boxers at Kronk Gym under the guidance of Emanuel Steward . In addition to Chambers et al. a. Milton McCrory , Steve McCrory , Duane Thomas and Thomas Hearns .

Darrell Chambers was American junior light welterweight champion in 1979 and represented the United States in the same year at the World Junior Championships in Yokohama , light welterweight. He won there over Mihai Niculescu from Romania and Imre Bacskai from Hungary on points and lost in the semifinals against Israel Akopkochjan from the USSR with 1: 4 judge votes on points, with which he won the bronze medal.

In 1980 he started in Moscow and Tbilisi in two international battles between the Soviet Union and the United States. He lost it in the light welterweight division against Serik Konakbajew and Ramzi Chirikbaya on points.

Profile career

Darrell Chambers began his professional career at the age of almost nineteen on March 13, 1981 in Lansing , Michigan , welterweight with a knockout victory in the first round over the Cuban exile Raul Hernandez. This was followed by 16 victories in a row over so-called opponents who did not challenge him too much. On July 10, 1983, he lost in Atlantic City , New Jersey , to Bobby Joe Young by technical knockout in the 9th round. After another six wins he lost on April 15, 1985 in Las Vegas against Luis Santana from the Dominican Republic by technical knockout in the 3rd round. This was his last professional fight. He hadn't contested a title fight during his time as a professional boxer.

After boxing

After his boxer career, Darrell Chambers slipped into the drug scene and made a living from drug trafficking. In 1994 he was arrested with another former boxer from Detroit in a drug deal and sentenced to life imprisonment. Currently serving at the Federal Correctional Institute in Florence , Colorado .
