Hector Munro Chadwick

Hector Munro Chadwick (born October 22, 1870 in Thornhill , West Yorkshire , † January 2, 1947 in Cambridge ) was a British English Medievalist and historian . From 1912 to 1941 he was Professor of Older English Language and Literature at Cambridge University .

Chadwick's research focus was the comparative literature and cultural studies of the Indo-European peoples and selected other cultures. In particular the comparison and research to the European and especially to the Germanic hero saga . His fundamental findings on establishing a heroic age ("Heroic Age"), and the subsequent research by Cecil Maurice Bowra on oral tradition ("Oral formulaic poetry") from narrative patterns in the saga to the written version, is a basis of the modern Heroic saga research. In addition, in England he contributed to the integration of the study programs and research into the Old English language, literature and culture.

In 1925 he became a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .

Chadwick was married to the philologist Nora Kershaw Chadwick , with whom he also published together.
