Band history

Guitarist and songwriter Matt Slocum met singer Leigh Bingham Nash in the early 1990s. They together recorded a demo tape that is now in circulation under the title The Original Demos ; An album followed in 1993, The Fatherless and the Widow for the R.EX Music label . The album featured drummer Chris Dodds from Slocum's previous band Love Coma , who joined the new band shortly after the album was released. There were also guitarist Tess Wiley , bassist J. J. Plasencio and drummer Dale Baker, who could be heard on the album This Beautiful Mess (1995).

In 1997 the band signed a contract with the music label Squint Entertainment and released the album Sixpence None the Richer , which aroused the interest of a wider audience. Kiss Me was released as a single in late 1998 . The song became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic and narrowly missed number one in the US. Kiss Me was also in the film "Eine wie keine" and in 2001 it appeared in the film Not Another Teenage Movie . The song was also used in an episode of the television series Dawson's Creek .

In early 2012, a cover version appeared in a Bipa commercial .

In the spring of 1999 the band recorded a cover version of There She Goes by The La's, which became their second hit single. This recording was also added to the re-release of their album Sixpence None the Richer , which now also hit the charts and was ultimately awarded a platinum record . This song became known in Germany through the series Mein Leben & Ich , because it can be heard in the background at the beginning of every episode.

The band had already recorded a follow-up album, but their record company had problems and was only bought by Word Records much later . It wasn't until October 2002 that a new album, Divine Discontent , was released. It differed significantly from the version that was originally supposed to appear - the pieces that weren't on it from the 1999 sessions almost all showed up later on singles or compilations.

Over the next few years, the band recorded a number of cover versions that appeared on various tribute albums or compilations, including songs by the Beach Boys , the Electric Light Orchestra , Sam Phillips , Crowded House , Pat Boone , Vera Lynn , Petra , ABBA and U2 .

On February 26, 2004, Matt Slocum announced in an open letter to Contemporary Christian Music Magazine that the group had disbanded.

On July 22nd, 2004, CCMBuzz reported that Matt Slocum had formed a new band with Lindsay Jamieson (formerly Departure Lounge ) and Sam Ashworth: the Astronaut Pushers . John Davis (formerly Superdrag ) joined the band in 2005. Leigh Nash continued as a solo artist and released a first album in 2006.

In November 2007, Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum decided to revitalize the group. In 2008 the EP My Dear Machine and the album The Dawn of Grace were released.

The title of the 1995 album was the template for renaming Subatlantic Starfish to This Beautiful Mess in 2001 .
