This Beautiful Mess is a Dutch indie rock band. It was founded in Vlissingen and is under contract with Sally Forth Records.

history

The beginning

The band was founded in 1997 by four friends who had a similar taste in music: mainly New Wave such as bands like The Cure , The Church , but also Radiohead . In August 1997 they named their band Subatlantic Starfish . The name This Beautiful Mess was still the name of the side project by Arjen van Wijk and Axel Kabboord, which still exists today under the name Rowing On The Lakes Of Canada . A year after they were founded, they were signed by Sally Forth Records. In December 1999, the recordings for the first album began.

2001 to 2003

In early 2001 the band changed its name to This Beautiful Mess after an album title by the band Sixpence None the Richer . In March 2001, they were joined by Brown Feather Sparrow singer Lydia Wever. The single Clean was released in April of the same year , followed just a month later by the debut album Falling On Deaf Ears . The album was so successful that the band got a contract with the American indie label Deep Elm Records , and so the CD was released in September in the USA, Canada and Japan. Deep Elm Records also released two samplers, each with a previously unreleased song by the band.

In autumn 2002 work began on the second album Temper The Wind To The Shorn Lamb , which was released in October of the following year. In the meantime, guitarist Joop Flamman left the band in March 2003. Axel Kabboord took his place and switched from drums to guitar. The place on the drums was later occupied by René de Vries.

2004 to 2008

In early 2004 This Beautiful Mess toured a number of European countries. After that it became quiet around the band as the band members were busy with other projects (like Brown Feather Sparrow). On November 21, 2005, however, they reported back on their MySpace page and began recording a new EP, which was released in autumn 2006 under the name Away With The Swine . There were mainly already recorded songs that were not used for the previous album. The EP was expanded in 2007 by 4 songs to a full-fledged album, which has so far only been officially released in Japan. Sally Forth Records offers a few copies on their own website and would like to make the 4 added songs available to the owners of the EP on the website as soon as possible.
