Alcântara (from the Arabic القنطرة, DMG al-qanṭara 'the bridge') is a Portuguese community ( freguesia ) in the 2nd Bairro of the capital Lisbon . It is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Belém , Ajuda , Benfica , Campolide , Santo Contestável , Prazeres and the capital river Tejo . The freguesia has existed since 1770, before that it was part of the Ajuda freguesia .

The Ponte 25 de Abril connects as a 3.2 kilometer long bridge with a 2278 meter long suspension bridge over the Tejo in north-south direction Alcântara with the southern city of Almada . After the Tsing Ma Bridge , it is the second longest suspension bridge worldwide with combined road and rail traffic. The A2 / IP7 motorway crosses the bridge in six lanes .

Local transport

There are two local train stations in Alcântara : Lisbon Alcântara-Terra Train Station ( Linha de Cintura ) and Lisbon Alcântara-Mar Train Station on the Linha de Cascais . They are about one kilometer apart, which makes it difficult to change trains between local trains arriving there. However, as part of the "Nova Alcântara" project, a new train station and the optimization of the container terminal are planned - an underground connection is also up for discussion.

In addition, the Avenida de India, the main artery towards Belém , Estoril and Cascais , crosses Alcântara . Numerous tram and bus routes serve stops within Alcântara.

The district is not yet connected to the subway network, but an extension of the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro from Rato to the Alcântara-Mar station is under discussion.
