The Liberty Media Corporation is an American media company , which is majority owned by John Malone . It holds stakes in television stations, newspapers and film studios. The company is traded on the stock exchange ( NASDAQ ) in the form of several tracking stocks .

history

After Liberty Media was first traded on the stock exchange in 1991, there were a number of mergers, including with Tele-Communications International Inc. In the course of the merger with AT&T in 1999, Liberty Media first became a tracking stock and in 2001 again as an independent company of AT&T split off. This was followed in 2003 by the merger with Ascent Media Group , Inc. and Liberty Satellite & Technology , Inc. In 2004, Liberty Media International (now Liberty Global ) was spun off and in 2005 the Discovery Holding Company , indirect owner of the Discovery Channel .

For the purchase of the Formula One Group in September 2016, the purchase price stated was 4.4 billion US dollars (approx. 3.93 billion euros). The managing director Bernie Ecclestone initially remained active as managing director, the company headquarters remained in London . On January 23, 2017, Ecclestone was dismissed as managing director with immediate effect. He was succeeded by Chase Carey .
