John Malone (born March 7, 1941 in Milford , Connecticut ) is an American entrepreneur and publisher .

Life

Malone studied at Yale University , New York University, and Johns Hopkins University . He has degrees in economics and electrical engineering , as well as a doctorate in operations research . From 1973 to 1996, Malone was president of cable television company Tele-Communications Inc. John Malone, through media company Liberty Media , of which he is president, holds a 32% stake in media company News Corporation and 26% in cable company Charter Communications . In 2017, Liberty Media also acquired the rights to Formula 1. In Germany, the cable network operator Unitymedia belonged to Liberty Global until it was sold to Vodafone .

The next largest shareholder in the News Corporation is the Saudi Arabian Prince al-Walid ibn Talal . His Kingdom Holding holds seven percent of the shares in 2005.

Malone is married and has two children. He lives with his family in Parker , Colorado .

According to the US American Forbes Magazine , Malone is one of the richest Americans and is listed at number 162 in The World's Billionaires in 2015 . According to the Forbes list, his fortune is approximately 8.3 billion US dollars (as of 2015). As a private individual, he is one of the largest landowners in the United States with 930,000 acres and owns land in the states of Maine, Maryland, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.
