The first branch was opened in 1947 in the Maxglan district of the state capital, and by 1955 the balance sheet total had increased to around 57 million schillings. In 1956, the Zell am See branch was added as the first branch outside the city, so to speak as a "country branch" . In 1965 the company moved into its headquarters on Saint-Julien-Strasse. In the 1970s, the bank established further branches in the state. In 1980 the cooperative reached a balance sheet total of 3 billion schillings. In 1986 Volksbank Saalfelden reg.Gen.mbH in Saalfelden merged with Volksbank Salzburg. In 1987 the Volksbank Seekirchen Salzburgischer Bauernkredit reg.Gen.mbH in Seekirchen followed with the merger. For the 50th anniversary in 1988, a balance sheet total of around 5 billion schillings was reported.

In 1988 Volksbank Salzburg also opened its first location in the neighboring state of Upper Austria in the Salzkammergut town of Bad Ischl . In 2007, the bank employed 350 people in 33 branches. In April 2012 Volksbank joined the Volksbanken Kreditinstitute-Verbund in accordance with Paragraph 30a of the Austrian Banking Act. This means that the regional Volksbanks and the special institutions of the Volksbank sector have formed a liquidity and liability association.

In October 2016 it was the turn of the merger with Volksbank Oberndorf. Volksbank Bad Goisern merged on July 8, 2017. The merger of Volksbank Steirisches Salzkammergut ended on July 22, 2017. Cooperative bank

There is a marketing presence as the Volksbank Group , regardless of this all cooperative banks are legally independent and form the Volksbank primary level . The banks are owned by their cooperative members , who signed a corresponding business share when they joined. The basic idea behind the cooperative movement was the idea of helping people to help themselves, according to Schulze-Delitzsch:

"What you cannot do on your own, connect with others who want the same."

The legal organs of a Volksbanken-Genossenschaft are the (full-time) executive board, the supervisory board and the general assembly, the latter is the assembly of the cooperative members and thus the highest decision-making body according to the Austrian cooperative law.

Trivia

Before the amendment to the Cooperative Act, the abbreviation reg.Gen.mbH for registered cooperative with limited liability was common for cooperative banks and cooperatives . Since the new legal situation, the term registered cooperative has been used in Austria . However, the abbreviation can - unlike in Germany - vary, therefore - also by cooperative banks - in addition to eG also eGen and e.Gen. used. A ruling by the Supreme Court has been available since 2009 on the legality of the deviating abbreviations .
