The Volksbank Group is an Austrian group of cooperative banks including the affiliated specialist banks and other service companies inside and outside Austria.

The Volksbank Group consists of the Volksbanks and, until July 4, 2015, the Volksbank AG Group (VBAG for short) and its subsidiary banks abroad. In July 2015, ÖVAG became a wind-down company, withdrew its banking license and left the association. Volksbank Wien-Baden took over the central functions of VBAG.

Mergers since 2013

At the end of the merger wave, there will only be eight regional Volksbanks. In January 2015, 12 of 41 institutes had not yet convened a general meeting to pass the merger resolutions. ÖVAG threatened to discontinue its services (payment transactions, securities processing, ...) if they wait any longer. Volksbank Landeck was among those who refused. However, the financial market regulator and finance ministers informed her that she could not leave the sector as planned.

The Volksbanken Osttirol Westkärnten, Almtal, Horn, Marchfeld, Gmünd, Bad Hall and the Apothekerbank had originally resisted the merger. By the end of March 2015, however, all mergers should now be resolved.

In the course of the restructuring and liquidation of ÖVAG, there were mergers of Volksbanks:

Association of Volksbanks

The banks of the primary level and the Österreichische Volksbanken-AG merged in 2012 to form an association of credit institutions in accordance with 30a BWG and have since formed a liability and liquidity association. With the approval of the Austrian Financial Market Authority on September 18, 2012, the Association of Credit Institutes (Volksbanken-Verbund) became legally effective. The association of Volksbanks was a condition for the restructuring measures for ÖVAG, supported by the Austrian state .

In January 2013, the association consisted of 51 regional Volksbanks, 6 specialist banks (Apothekerbank, Ärztebank, Gärtnerbank, IMMO-Bank, Sparda-Bank Austria Nord (Linz), Sparda-Bank Austria Süd (Villach / Innsbruck)), 4 house credit cooperatives, the start : bausparkasse and Österreichische Volksbanken-Aktiengesellschaft (ÖVAG). However, the number of institutes has since been reduced through mergers.

Volksbank Osttirol-Westkärnten leaves the company

Volksbank Osttirol-Westkärnten merged with Volksbank Gmünd in November 2015. The two banks separated from the Volksbanken-Haftungsverbund for a one-off release amount of 8 million euros . The merged bank is called DolomitenBank Osttirol-Westkärnten .

Contrary to the original resolution to integrate Volksbank Marchfeld into Volksbank Wien, it was announced at the end of November 2016 that Volksbank Marchfeld would leave the Volksbanken-Haftungsverbund. Since then it has operated under the Marchfelder Bank brand .

The Republic of Austria joins Volksbank Vienna

In order to secure the state participation capital granted to the Volksbank Group in the amount of 300 million euros, the Republic of Austria (federal government) invested 25% plus one share in Volksbank Wien. The entry that took place in September 2015 was free of charge for the federal government and, if repaid, there will be an exit again.
