It was founded in 1929, making it the oldest building society established in Austria . With a market share of 10.4% (2008) it is the fourth largest building society on the Austrian market. The company's total assets in 2013 were just over 2 billion euros .

On the initiative of the Lower Austrian Volksbanks, the Bausparkasse was founded on May 28, 1929 as a home savings and real estate loan fund by Austrian commercial cooperatives, reg.Gen.mbH in Herzogenburg . In 1930 the company's first construction advice center was set up in Vienna's 1st district . From 1974 to 2016 the company's headquarters were in the 9th district of Vienna.
The company has operated under different names in its long history. In 1959 it was renamed General Bausparkasse Österreichischer Volksbanken und Genossenschaften reg.Gen.mbH . The abbreviation "ABV" at that time led the company until August 2014.
As of December 31, 2009, Allgemeine Bausparkasse (ABV) acquired 74.26% of the share capital of Immo Bank , which also belonged to the Volksbank group . The ABV cites the strengthening of the market position and the bundling of housing construction expertise in the Volksbank sector as the main motives for purchasing IMMO Bank. Since August 2014 the company has operated as start: bausparkasse; until the end of 2016, this will appear on the market together with the companies Immo-Bank and Immo-Contract as the start: brand .
