The Volksbank Bad Goisern registered cooperative was an Austrian regional bank in the Inner Salzkammergut with headquarters in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt . It had five branches in the Hallstatt-Dachstein UNESCO World Heritage area . In July 2017, this cooperative merged with Volksbank Salzburg eG.

history

Savings book of the Volksbank-Genossenschaft Goisern, around 1925

In January 1873 four Goisern citizens, namely Josef Peer (forest worker), Josef Putz (master carpenter), Georg Winterauer (house owner) and Josef Pilz (house owner) founded a savings and credit association in Goisern. They were based on Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch , a German politician who, in view of the financial hardship of the population at the time, propagated a cooperative system of self-help.

In the year the cooperative was founded, Austria was hit by the collapse of the Vienna Stock Exchange and the subsequent economic crisis. Economic recovery began in the Salzkammergut from around 1877, the opening year of the Salzkammergut Railway . The new railway connection and the stays of Emperor Franz Joseph I in his summer residence, which he maintained in the neighboring town of Bad Ischl, boosted tourism in the region in particular. In the first years of existence, the main focus of the Volksbank was on the amalgamation of small traders in order to achieve greater creditworthiness with joint liability. In the beginning, business hours were half a day on Saturday and Sunday and all day on Monday. After the First World War, it was possible to switch to daily opening times.

After Volksbanks had been founded in other parts of Austria, they created the Österreichische Volksbanken-Aktiengesellschaft as the leading institution in 1922 , and the Austrian Cooperative Association (Schulze-Delitzsch) adopted this name in 1930.

In 1952 the Goisern savings and loan association changed its name to Volksbank Bad Goisern. In the course of the following decades, Volksbank Goisern opened further branches in the Salzkammergut .

Since the end of 2014, negotiations have been going on nationwide in the Volksbank sector to merge the 41 Austrian Volksbank cooperatives to form 8 Volksbanks. In this context, the Volksbanken Bad Goisern and Steirisches Salzkammergut fired on to join Volksbank Salzburg eG in July 2017.

The Volksbanks in the Salzkammergut

Previous structure

Before the restructuring of the Volksbank sector in 2016/17, the following cooperatives were represented in the Salzkammergut:

  • Volksbank Bad Goisern e.Gen. in the interior of the Salzkammergut,
  • Volksbank Gmunden-Vöcklabruck e.Gen. in the northern Salzkammergut,
  • Volksbank Steirisches Salzkammergut e.Gen. in the Bad Aussee area,
  • Volksbank Salzburg eG with its (then) only Upper Austrian branch in Bad Ischl.
New structure

The Volksbank Gmunden-Vöcklabruck e.Gen. carried out the merger into the new Volksbank Oberösterreich AG in mid-2016. Volksbank Oberösterreich has since extended to Altmünster in the northern part of the Salzkammergut , and the Ebensee branch was closed.

The Volksbank Steirisches Salzkammergut e.Gen. in the Bad Aussee area decided to merge with Volksbank Salzburg on July 22, 2017.

The previous Volksbank Bad Goisern had five branches in the judicial district of Bad Ischl, which were located in Bad Goisern / Zentrum , Bad Goisern / Steeg (Au) , Hallstatt , Obertraun and Gosau . The Volksbank was represented twice in Bad Goisern, and it was the only local financial institution in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Obertraun. The Goiserer cooperative was incorporated into Volksbank Salzburg eG on July 8, 2017. The (Salzburg) bank branch in Bad Ischl remained unchanged. The Steeg (Au) and Obertraun offices were closed in November 2018.

As a result of this restructuring in the banking sector, the bank branches in the Upper Austrian district of Gmunden are divided between Volksbank Oberösterreich ( judicial district Gmunden ) and Volksbank Salzburg ( judicial district Bad Ischl ).

Cooperative bank

Although there is a marketing presence as a Volksbank Group , all cooperative banks are legally independent and form the Volksbank primary level . The banks are owned by their cooperative members , who signed a corresponding business share when they joined. The basic idea behind the cooperative movement was the idea of helping people to help themselves, according to Schulze-Delitzsch:

"What you cannot do on your own, connect with others who want the same."

The legal organs of a Volksbanken-Genossenschaft are the (full-time) executive board, the supervisory board and the general assembly, the latter is the assembly of the cooperative members and thus the highest decision-making body according to the Austrian cooperative law.
