Giancarlo Martini

Giancarlo Martini (born August 16, 1947 in Lavezzola , † March 26, 2013 in Forlì ) was an Italian racing driver and entrepreneur . He is referred to in some sources as the co-founder of the Formula 1 team Minardi , which first took part in the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship , and was the uncle of long-time Minardi driver Pierluigi Martini .

Racing career

Giancarlo Martini and the Scuderia del Passatore , the team of his long-time friend Giancarlo Minardi , won the runner-up title in 1972 and the title in Formula Italia in 1973 . 1974 he played for the team two races of the Formula 2 European Championship with March - BMW , from 1975 to 1977 he was a regular rider of the team that took at that time under different names. His best successes were two third places, in 1976 he finished his best season with 12 points as seventh in the championship.

In 1976 Martini also contested two Formula 1 races that were not part of the World Championship in a Ferrari 312T , which Scuderia Ferrari had loaned to the Minardis team, which was then known as Team Everest. At the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch , Martini had an accident during the warm-up lap in which the car was badly damaged. At the BRDC International Trophy in Silverstone , he finished tenth.
