Life

Dorothea Charlotte was a daughter of Margrave Albrecht von Brandenburg-Ansbach (1620–1667) from his second marriage to Sophie Margarete (1634–1664), daughter of Count Joachim Ernst zu Oettingen-Oettingen.

On December 1, 1687, she married Landgrave Ernst Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt in Darmstadt . He was under the reign of his mother Elisabeth Dorothea von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg until the following year .

Dorothea Charlotte, a staunch pietist , had a significant influence on her husband, especially on religious matters. In close cooperation with Philipp Jacob Spener , she succeeded in decisively promoting Pietism, whose patroness she became, at court and at the state university. After the death of Dorothea Charlotte, Ernst Ludwig clearly turned away from Pietism. The landgravine was buried in the princely crypt of the Darmstadt city church .
