Christian II of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld (born June 22, 1637 in Bischweiler , † April 26, 1717 in Birkenfeld ) was Count Palatine and Duke of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld from 1671 . In 1671 he was the heir of Karl II. Otto von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld , who died without male descendants.

Life

Christian was a son of the Count Palatine Christian I of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld-Bischweiler from his marriage to Magdalena Katharina (1606–1648), daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Johann II of Zweibrücken . His brother was Johann Karl von Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen , the founder of the line of the dukes in Bavaria , with whom he concluded separate contracts on the Gelnhausen deputation in 1681 and 1683.

Christian and his younger brother were trained by Philipp Jacob Spener and later studied at the University of Strasbourg . Then the brothers undertook a 5-year cavalier tour that took them to France, Holland, England, Sweden and Switzerland, among others.

Christian II took part in the battle of Mogersdorf on August 1, 1664 as colonel and regiment owner of the Protestant regiment on foot of the Swabian Empire . In 1688 Christian became Lieutenant-General in French service . Louis XIV handed over a regiment to Christian, which he commanded from 1668 as Mestre de camp for 28 years.

Through his marriage in 1673 Christian came into the possession of the Rappoltstein rule and in 1699, after the Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Veldenz line died out, he acquired parts of Lützelstein and the Guttenberg rule . At times, Christian was the guardian of the County of Hanau and administered the Principality of Zweibrücken . He was considered to be very skillful politically and diplomatically.
