Baron Ludwig von Stein (detail from the portrait of the Duke Christian IV family, by Johann Christian von Mannlich )

Ludwig von Stein (born January 12, 1693 ; † August 12, 1780 ) was a bastard of Count Palatine Christian II of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld from the house of Wittelsbach , colonel , baron and benefactor of the city of Zweibrücken.

Life

Baron Ludwig von Stein devoted himself to military service and subsequently became a French colonel and commandant of a battalion in the royal Regiment d'Alsace and a knight of the French Military Merit Order. After he had been under this regiment for 40 years, he stayed at the court of his nephew Christian IV of Pfalz-Zweibrücken from 1748 , where he enjoyed high honors and many graces. He was the educator of the barons Christian von Zweybrücken (1752-1817) and Wilhelm von Zweybrücken (1754-1807), children from the morganatic marriage of his nephew to Marianne Camasse, Countess von Forbach . In the family portrait of Duke Christian IV, painted by Christian Mannlich in 1764 , Baron Ludwig von Stein appears on the left, sitting in an armchair, as a reference point for the family.

In his will of April 3, 1780, Baron von Stein bequeathed the considerable sum of 19,364 guilders to the hospital in Zweibrücken and thereby became a benefactor of the urban poor and sick. A painting of Baron von Stein by Johann Georg Ziesenis, owned by the city, hung in the conference room of the Zweibrücker town house in 1885 and until the Second World War . The painting was lost in the final chaos of the war.
